Project description

The increase in asylum seekers and refugees in European countries has generated the need for them to learn the language of their host countries. However, these learning needs are often not formally addressed and rely on NGOs and volunteers. The aim of this project is to develop training resources for teachers and volunteers who teach the language of the host country to asylum seekers and refugees. In addition, it seeks to create online educational resources to share and confront ideas, practices and pedagogical approaches, as well as to establish international networks.

Project objectives

The project aims to determine and prioritize training needs in mother tongue teaching for asylum seekers and refugees. A self-assessment instrument and work scheme will be developed to address the training and communication needs of these target groups. In addition, a training course for educators will be created in the partners’ languages. The project will also include the identification and use of instruments to evaluate impact, incorporating data and feedback from target groups. Country-specific case studies will be generated and the results and materials developed will be widely shared.

Project results

An impact study on the methodology and resources updated with case studies. A set of digital resources for use in training and supporting educators and volunteers teaching their native language to asylum seekers and refugees.
